Kano State experienced a rare and symbolic departure from tradition as three different Eid-el-Fitr prayers were held across the city, reflecting growing divisions among its traditional and political leadership.

The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, led prayers at the Kofar Mata Eid Ground around 8:00 a.m., joined by key government officials including Governor Abba Yusuf, Secretary to the State Government Umar Faruq, and Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Adamu Bakori. His sermon centered on unity and peaceful coexistence.
Simultaneously, the 15th Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero, conducted a separate prayer at the Nasarawa Palace, led by Sheikh Kamaluddeen Albasa. According to his spokesperson, the gathering focused on peace and stability, with notable figures such as Baffa Babba Dan Agundi and Usman Alhaji in attendance.
In another development, Rabiu Kwankwaso, leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, observed Eid prayers at his residence along Miller Road. He was joined by Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo and political allies, in what aides described as a period of reflection and gratitude.
This unusual occurrence of multiple Eid congregations underscores lingering tensions in Kano, rooted in the emirate crisis that began in 2020 with the removal of Sanusi II and the installation of Bayero, followed by Sanusi’s reinstatement in 2024—resulting in parallel traditional authorities.
Recent political developments, including Governor Yusuf’s defection from the NNPP to the APC, have further deepened the divide.
Traditionally, Eid prayers in Kano were observed as a unified gathering at the Kofar Mata Eid Ground, bringing together the Emir, political leaders, and residents. The latest development marks a significant shift from that long-standing practice, highlighting widening cracks within the state’s leadership.
