Fear grips Nigerians after video shows kidnapped student pleading for life

Fear and outrage have spread across Nigeria following the emergence of a disturbing video showing a kidnapped University of Jos (UNIJOS) student, identified as John Arum.

The student was reportedly abducted by armed bandits while travelling along the Kaduna–Jos highway, a route widely known for recurring kidnappings and violent attacks. His captors are now demanding a ransom of ₦30 million for his release.
The situation took a more alarming turn when the kidnappers allegedly used the victim’s phone to record him while he was being tortured. The video was then sent to his class group chat, leaving fellow students shocked and traumatized.
In the footage, the student appears visibly distressed, pleading for his life as he is beaten. A fellow student, Ezikima Asunga, confirmed the incident, stating that the victim is his coursemate. He also expressed concern that the victim’s family might not yet be aware of the abduction, as there has been no direct communication with them.
Since surfacing online, the video has sparked widespread reactions from Nigerians, many of whom condemned the act and decried the worsening state of insecurity in the country. Some social media users also pointed out that the kidnappers were not masked, suggesting that this could aid security agencies in identifying them.
A particularly disturbing account from the video stated: “He was kidnapped on his way to Kaduna from Jos. His captors are torturing him severely and using his phone to send pictures and videos to his class group. When asked if he’s a Christian, he denied it, hoping to save himself from pain, but the torture only intensified. He began calling on Jesus, which led to further mockery from his captors.”
Many Nigerians have called on security agencies, including the police and the military, to act swiftly in rescuing the student and apprehending those responsible. The incident has also been described as part of a growing national security crisis requiring urgent intervention.
As of the time this report was filed, security authorities had not issued any official statement regarding the incident or any ongoing rescue efforts.
