Embattled former Virginia Lieutenant Governor, Justin Fairfax, reportedly killed his estranged wife, Cerina Fairfax, before taking his own life inside their million-dollar home outside Washington early Thursday, according to police.

The 47-year-old Democrat allegedly shot his wife multiple times in the basement of their residence in Annandale shortly after midnight, before turning the gun on himself in another part of the house. This was disclosed by Fairfax County Police Chief, Kevin Davis.
The couple’s two teenage children were inside the home at the time of the incident, with their son placing a 911 call to report the shootings.
Describing the situation, Davis said the case is both “high-profile” and deeply tragic, noting it represents a significant fall from grace for a family that once appeared to have a promising future. He also stressed the emotional toll on the children, who not only lost both parents but were present when the घटना occurred.
Justin and Cerina Fairfax got married on June 17, 2006, after meeting as undergraduate students at Duke University. Their two children are currently in high school.
Fairfax was once regarded as a rising figure in the Democratic Party during the 2010s, having worked on presidential campaigns for Al Gore and John Kerry, before establishing himself in the legal profession.
After serving as a federal prosecutor, he ran unsuccessfully for Attorney General of Virginia in 2013, narrowly losing the Democratic primary to Mark Herring.
In 2017, Fairfax was elected Lieutenant Governor alongside Ralph Northam. However, his political ambitions suffered a major setback in 2019 when multiple women accused him of sexual assault.
The couple, who had been married for nearly two decades, were still living together despite ongoing divorce proceedings, police confirmed. Court records show Fairfax had been scheduled to appear for a hearing earlier in the week.
Cerina filed for divorce in July 2025, more than a year after their separation, in line with Virginia law requiring couples to live apart for at least one year before filing.
Police described the situation as an ongoing domestic dispute tied to a complicated and contentious divorce process.
At least two women had publicly accused Fairfax of sexual assault. Vanessa Tyson alleged that Fairfax raped her during the 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston, an accusation he denied, insisting the encounter was consensual.
Another accuser, Meredith Watson, claimed Fairfax assaulted her in 2000 while they were both students at Duke. Fairfax also denied this allegation, stating he had never forced himself on anyone.
He further questioned the timing of the accusations, suggesting they were politically motivated attempts to derail his career at a time when he was considered a potential candidate for governor.
