Lawmaker from Kano dies at 66 after prolonged illness, House mourns loss
A member of the House of Representatives, Hassan, who represented Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency of Kano State, has died at the age of 66.
He reportedly passed away on Friday evening after a prolonged illness.
The spokesperson of the House, Akin Rotimi, confirmed the lawmaker’s death. He noted that Hassan, who served as Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary, was elected into the National Assembly in 2023 under the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
Describing his passing as a major loss, Rotimi said it was deeply felt by the House of Representatives, his constituents, and the nation at large.
He added that Nigeria had lost one of its foremost legislative counsels and legal draftsmen, whose contributions significantly shaped legislative development and constitutional processes over the years. According to him, many laws enacted in the country bear Hassan’s imprint.
Rotimi further highlighted that Hassan brought decades of experience from the National Assembly bureaucracy into politics, having risen to the highest administrative level and retired as a Permanent Secretary before joining partisan politics.
His background in governance and administration, coupled with his institutional knowledge, enriched parliamentary debates and national discourse.
Within the House, he was regarded as a committed and diligent legislator. As Deputy Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, he made impactful contributions aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s justice system and promoting the rule of law.
He also served on several other committees, including Public Petitions, Aviation, Solid Minerals, Constitution Review, and Treaties, Protocols and Agreements, where he played key roles in legislative oversight and policy formulation.
Rotimi noted that Hassan was widely respected for his professionalism, legislative expertise, humility, and calm disposition, as well as his ability to build consensus.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, on behalf of the House, extended condolences to Hassan’s family, the people of his constituency, the government and people of Kano State, as well as his colleagues and associates.
The late lawmaker will be buried according to Islamic rites on Saturday.
Rotimi prayed for the repose of his soul, expressing hope that his legacy would endure.
