Bandits Overrun Police Base in Kwara, Kill Three Officers in Midnight Attack
Gunmen have attacked a Police Mobile Force (PMF) camp in Tenebo community, Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, killing at least three officers and injuring two others.
The attack occurred in the early hours of Saturday and reportedly took security personnel by surprise.
The assailants were said to have arrived in large numbers, with some riding motorcycles, as they stormed the facility.
A resident, Mr. Mohammed Abdul, recounted that the attackers came around 2 a.m. in large numbers and attempted to invade the town but were confronted by security operatives, leading to a prolonged exchange of gunfire.
He said that by the end of the gun battle, three officers had lost their lives while two others sustained injuries. He added that the attackers eventually retreated, noting that no one was kidnapped and it was unclear if the bandits suffered casualties.
Another resident, Mr. Halidu Umar, said the intensity of the attack left residents in fear, as those living around the area could not sleep throughout the night. He explained that Tenebo is located about four kilometers from Kaiama town and serves as a route to the National Park, which has reportedly been used by bandits as a base of operations.
He added that the attack followed a recurring pattern where bandits strike and then retreat into the forest.
The Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, confirmed the incident in a telephone conversation on Saturday, stating that three officers were killed while two others who were injured are currently responding to treatment. He also noted that no arrests have been made.
The incident comes barely a month after a similar attack in Kemanji, a neighboring community to Tenebo, where bandits overran a joint security outpost, killing three soldiers and two vigilantes.
During that attack, the assailants reportedly made away with an army gun truck and other equipment, although they were said to have suffered casualties.
In an earlier incident, bandits killed five members of a local forest guard in Nuku community, another suburb of Kaiama, and set their operational vehicles and facilities on fire.
