Border Tension Turns Deadly: One Nigerian killed, seven injured as mob violence erupts in Cameroon
FOTOKOL, Cameroon — One Nigerian has been killed and seven others injured following a wave of retaliatory violence triggered by a fatal stabbing incident in the border town.
Security sources revealed that the unrest began around 3:30 p.m. on April 29, 2026, when a Cameroonian man was allegedly stabbed to death by a Nigerian suspect who fled the scene.
In response, enraged mobs reportedly attacked Nigerians residing in Fotokol, carrying out reprisal assaults. By the end of the violence, one person had been lynched while seven others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Troops from the 3 Battalion, Mechanised, alongside the 24 Task Force Brigade, were deployed to the area to restore calm and prevent further escalation.
The injured victims were subsequently evacuated across the border to a general hospital in Ngala, Borno State, where they are currently receiving medical treatment.
Meanwhile, the suspect linked to the initial stabbing remains at large, and tension continues to linger in the community.
Authorities say efforts are ongoing to de-escalate the situation, apprehend the suspect, and ensure the safety of Nigerians in the area.
However, for the affected families, the intervention came too late.
