Okocha Still Reigns Supreme: FIFA Recognises Nigerian Legend’s World Cup Feat

FIFA has confirmed that former Nigeria international Austin Okocha remains the holder of the record for the most successful dribbles completed in a single FIFA World Cup match.

The record was established during the 1994 World Cup in the United States when Okocha successfully completed 15 dribbles in Nigeria’s Round of 16 encounter against Italy.
According to FIFA’s statistical records, the achievement remains the highest number of successful dribbles recorded by any player in a single World Cup match.
The game saw Nigeria face one of the most organised defensive teams in international football at the time. Italy’s defence included experienced stars such as Paolo Maldini, Demetrio Albertini and Alessandro Costacurta.
Despite the discipline and structure of the Italian side, Okocha consistently drove forward with the ball, navigating tight spaces, overcoming pressure and advancing play through both central and wide positions.
FIFA’s classification of World Cup records identifies Okocha’s tally of 15 successful dribbles as the highest ever recorded in a single match, with no player surpassing the feat in subsequent tournaments.
Second on the list is Brazil’s Jairzinho, who completed 13 successful dribbles against Uruguay during the 1970 World Cup.
England’s Paul Gascoigne also registered 13 successful dribbles in a match against Cameroon at the 1990 World Cup, placing him alongside Jairzinho just behind Okocha in the rankings.
A number of football greats follow with 12 successful dribbles in a single World Cup game. They include Portugal’s Eusébio, West Germany’s Reinhard Libuda, the Netherlands’ Johan Cruyff, Italy’s Sandro Mazzola, Argentina’s Diego Maradona and Germany’s Jamal Musiala, who achieved the mark against Costa Rica at the 2022 World Cup.
While Okocha holds the record for the highest number of successful dribbles in a single World Cup match, overall tournament statistics show that Lionel Messi leads in total completed take-ons in World Cup history with 125.
For a single World Cup edition, Maradona’s performance at the 1986 tournament remains the benchmark, with 53 successful dribbles recorded throughout the competition.
FIFA’s records distinguish between outstanding performances in a single match and cumulative achievements across multiple tournaments, making Okocha’s 15-dribble display a unique benchmark for peak individual output in one World Cup game. Agency Report
