FRSC Pushes For Construction Of Bicycle Lanes In Road Projects

The Federal Road Safety Corps FRSC has called on governments at all levels, town planners, and development partners to always incorporate bicycle lanes into road construction projects to promote cycling-friendly communities.

FRSC Corps Marshal, Mallam Shehu Mohammed, who made the call in Abuja at the flag-off of the 2026 United Nations World Bicycle Day celebration said promoting cycling is not only a transportation solution but also an investment in public health and environmental protection.

Represented by the Deputy Corps Marshal Clement Oladele, the Corps Marshal said the FRSC recognizes that safe cycling requires adequate infrastructure and responsible behaviour from all road users.

He added that the Corps is intensifying advocacy for protected bicycle lanes and promoting a culture of road-sharing among motorists and cyclists.

According to him, every trip made using bicycles contributes to the reduction of traffic congestion and harmful emissions.

“Cycling also improves physical health and provides affordable mobility for students, traders, and low-income earners.”

He assured that the FRSC would continue to promote cycling through sustained public enlightenment campaigns on cycling visibility and safety.

The FRSC boss urged cyclists to continue riding responsibly, obey traffic regulations, and serve as ambassadors of safer and greener transportation.

In a message, the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem said this year’s theme, “Boosting Urban Life with the Bicycle,” highlights the important role cycling can play in addressing traffic congestion, pollution, road crashes, and sedentary lifestyles in rapidly growing cities.

Represented by Justice Eberechi Nyesom-Wike, the President of the Court of Appeal commended the United Nations for setting aside a day each year to promote and highlight the importance of cycling.

She urged stakeholders to join the FRSC in implementing the National Cycling Policy.

Representatives of the Cycling Federation of Nigeria and other cyclists’ associations, in their solidarity messages, pledged support for the campaign in promoting bicycle riding as a means of reducing transportation costs, particularly in rural communities.
