Security operatives intensify rescue efforts in Kwara as kidnappers demand millions in ransom and reportedly threaten the fate of female captives.

Fresh anxiety has engulfed the Yashikira community in Kwara State after terrorists holding the wives of the Emir and other abducted residents reportedly threatened to forcibly marry off the female captives if a N150 million ransom is not paid.

According to security sources involved in ongoing rescue operations, the threat followed delays in negotiations after the midnight attack on the Emir’s palace and the Yashikira Police Divisional Headquarters on May 24.
Abductors Issue Threat
The kidnappers are reportedly demanding about N15 million for each of the roughly 10 victims in their custody. Through intermediaries handling negotiations, the abductors allegedly warned that failure to meet their demands would result in the Emir’s wives and other female captives being handed over to their commanders as wives.
The message has reportedly been relayed to local vigilantes and security operatives, increasing fears among relatives of the victims.
How the Attack Occurred
Survivors recounted that heavily armed gunmen riding motorcycles and carrying automatic weapons launched the attack on May 24, 2026. They reportedly overpowered security personnel, who were said to have been outgunned.
A surviving police officer explained that the attackers overwhelmed officers before proceeding to the palace, where they spent nearly an hour abducting residents.
Community members said the gunmen also set parts of the palace on fire and burnt vehicles before escaping with several women and children.
The Kwara State Police Command confirmed that at least 10 people were kidnapped during the attack and that sections of the palace were damaged by fire.
Community in Fear
The latest threat has heightened concerns in Yashikira and increased pressure on security agencies working to secure the victims’ release in Kaiama Local Government Area.
As negotiations remain stalled, residents continue to express fears over the safety and wellbeing of the abducted women while rescue efforts continue.
