Terror on Borno Highway: Seven-Month-Old Baby Among 13 Travellers Abducted by Suspected Boko Haram Insurgents

Fear and anxiety have continued to mount among families in Borno State following the abduction of 13 travellers, including women and a seven-month-old baby, by suspected Boko Haram insurgents along the Biu–Damaturu highway through the Kamuya axis.

According to reports, the victims were kidnapped on April 15, 2026, after terrorists intercepted two Golf Wagon vehicles transporting passengers and took them to an unknown destination.
Families Appeal for Rescue Efforts
Relatives of the abducted travellers have appealed to the Federal Government, the Borno State Government, security agencies and humanitarian organisations to intensify efforts toward securing the victims’ release.
The appeal was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by Mallam Hassan Yati on behalf of the affected families.
Yati said family members have remained traumatised and distressed due to the lack of information regarding the whereabouts and condition of their loved ones.
“Among the victims were women and children, including a seven-month-old baby,” Yati stated, describing the incident as both heartbreaking and traumatic.
He noted that the families have endured sleepless nights and growing uncertainty as weeks pass without any significant updates.
“The families are calling on government authorities, security agencies, humanitarian organisations and all relevant stakeholders to urgently intervene and ensure the safe rescue of the abducted travellers,” he said.
He added: “Every passing day increases the suffering and fears of innocent families whose only desire is to see their loved ones return home safely.”
Concerns Over Dangerous Highway
Residents also expressed concern over the poor condition of the Buni Gari–Kamuya–Buratai–Biu road, a key route linking Southern Borno with Maiduguri as well as Adamawa and Gombe states.
They lamented that the road has remained in a deplorable state for several years, making it a dangerous route for travellers. According to residents, insurgents have continued to exploit the situation to carry out attacks and abductions along the highway.
The families appealed to Nigerians to remember the victims in their prayers and support lawful efforts aimed at restoring peace and security across highways in the North-East. They expressed optimism that with urgent and coordinated intervention, the abducted travellers could still be rescued alive.
