A dispute between an Islamic scholar and a Fulani man ended in tragedy on Saturday, leading to deaths and widespread destruction in Ilesha Baruba, Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State.

The Kwara State Police Command confirmed on Sunday that two persons lost their lives while 10 houses were set ablaze during the unrest.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the incident began following an altercation between an Islamic scholar, Alhaji Mohammed Ilyasu, and an unidentified Fulani man.
The police said both men attacked each other with machetes during the confrontation, sustaining severe injuries. They were immediately taken to a hospital for treatment but were later confirmed dead.
The situation escalated after the deaths, as angry youths allegedly carried out reprisal attacks, setting several houses on fire.
Police Condemn Extrajudicial Actions
In a statement issued on Sunday, the command described the development as a case of mob violence, arson, and extrajudicial killings.
The police said investigations have commenced to identify and apprehend those responsible for the reprisal attacks and destruction of property.
Rising Concerns Over Reprisal Violence
The incident has once again drawn attention to recurring tensions in Baruten Local Government Area, a border community inhabited by Fulani groups and local farming populations. Disputes in the area have often escalated into ethnic or communal reprisals within a short period.
Security personnel have since been deployed to Ilesha Baruba to restore calm and prevent further breakdown of law and order.
