Dreams cut short: Nine youths perish chasing opportunities in Lagos.
Nine young men from Yabo Local Government Area of Sokoto State have lost their lives in a road accident while travelling to Lagos in search of better economic opportunities.
Shamaki described the accident as a heartbreaking tragedy that has plunged the victims’ families and the entire Yabo community into mourning. He said the deceased youths left home with hopes of earning a legitimate livelihood, but their dreams were tragically cut short by the fatal crash. According to him, the victims were hardworking and ambitious young men whose deaths are a significant loss to their families, the constituency and Sokoto State.
The lawmaker noted that the incident reflects the harsh economic realities compelling many Nigerian youths to leave their communities in search of opportunities elsewhere. He added that the tragedy has left a deep emotional scar on Yabo and the wider Shagari/Yabo Federal Constituency, stressing that no words can adequately comfort the bereaved families. On behalf of the people of Yabo State Constituency, he extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, traditional rulers and residents of the local government area, while praying for Almighty Allah to forgive the departed souls, grant them Aljannatul Firdaus and give their loved ones the strength to bear the loss.
Shamaki also called on the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other relevant agencies to intensify efforts to reduce road crashes across the country. He further urged governments at all levels to invest more in youth empowerment, skills acquisition and job creation programmes to provide sustainable economic opportunities closer to home. The tragic incident has once again drawn attention to the growing number of young Nigerians undertaking risky long-distance journeys in search of better livelihoods amid rising unemployment and economic hardship.
