NBC laments zero capital funding as boundary disputes persist.

The National Boundary Commission (NBC) has disclosed that it has not received any capital funding for 2026, despite having a capital budget allocation of about ₦13.

The commission made this known on Tuesday while presenting its 2025 budget performance and 2026 progress report before the Senate Committee on State and Local Government. It explained that the absence of capital releases had stalled the execution of planned projects, noting that no funds had been released for capital expenditure. The commission added that it had accessed ₦335.2 million from its ₦1.18 billion overhead allocation, while ₦564.5 million had been released from its personnel budget of about ₦1.05 billion.
Members of the committee acknowledged that the lack of capital funding had affected the commission’s performance. They noted that it was difficult to assess budget implementation when the required capital releases had not been made, especially with the year already entering its second half.
The NBC also informed lawmakers that its 2025 capital allocation of about ₦2.9 billion was later reduced, with only about ₦1.26 billion eventually released. According to the commission, contracts had already been awarded before the budget was cut, prompting it to direct contractors to execute only the portion covered by available funds while suspending the remaining work until additional releases are made.
The commission explained that the capital allocation covered both core and constituency projects, with releases tied to specific projects. During the hearing, lawmakers also questioned the commission over multiple separate information technology projects in its budget, urging it to consolidate related digital initiatives to improve efficiency and achieve better value for money.
Despite the funding challenges, senators commended the commission for its efforts in resolving boundary disputes across the country, saying its interventions had helped prevent conflicts between communities and states. The committee pledged its continued support for the commission in carrying out its mandate despite the financial constraints.
