₦301bn Drug Haul Destroyed in Lagos as Navy, NDLEA Intensify Crackdown

The Nigerian Navy and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have intensified their joint efforts to combat illicit drug trafficking with the destruction of 329,865.

The public destruction exercise was carried out on Monday, August 17, 2026, by the NDLEA Lagos State Strategic Command at the Nigerian Navy Marine Centre, Navy Town, Ojo, Lagos.
The exercise was attended by senior officials of the Nigerian Navy, NDLEA, Lagos State Government, Nigeria Customs Service and other stakeholders, highlighting the growing importance of inter-agency collaboration in tackling drug trafficking and related security threats.
According to the Nigerian Navy, 246,864.535 kilogrammes of the destroyed substances were seized by the NDLEA Lagos State Strategic Command between April 2025 and May 2026. Another 83,001.050 kilogrammes were recovered by NDLEA commands at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Tin Can, Apapa and the Marine Command.
The substances destroyed included cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, various cannabis products, ephedrine, tramadol, codeine syrup and other opioids. Their combined estimated street value was put at ₦301,058,076,000.
Speaking on behalf of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Abubakar Abdullahi Mustapha, emphasised the need for sustained collaboration among security and law enforcement agencies to effectively tackle emerging threats.
He commended the longstanding partnership between the Nigerian Navy and NDLEA, particularly their joint efforts to disrupt illicit drug trafficking networks and intercept vessels of interest within Nigeria’s maritime domain.
The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brigadier General Mohammed Buba Marwa (Rtd), described the exercise as a demonstration of the nation’s collective resolve to permanently remove seized illicit drugs from circulation.
Marwa said the destruction would also help deny criminal elements the resources required to sustain their activities and strengthen the fight against drug-related crimes.
The Nigerian Navy reaffirmed its commitment to deepening cooperation with the NDLEA and other relevant agencies to disrupt illicit drug trafficking networks, enhance national security and promote a safer maritime environment.
