Tragedy in Ife: Vigilance Group Member Dies After Sex Encounter

ILE-IFE, OSUN — A Sunday afternoon in Odi-Olokun, Ile-Ife, turned tragic after a popular local vigilance group member collapsed and died minutes after a sexual encounter, leaving his lover in police custody and residents speculating about a possible “thunderbolt.”

The deceased, identified as Sunday but popularly known as “Apetu”, was reportedly rushed out of a room on Ooni Ilare Street at about 2:30pm on Sunday, gasping for air, screaming and visibly distressed.

A video that has gone viral showed Apetu pleading with the woman, saying, “Give me urine… give me urine.” Minutes later, he died.

Arrest and Confusion
The woman was immediately taken into custody by operatives of the Moore Police Division in Ile-Ife.

A situation report attributed to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, described Apetu as “showing signs of severe physical distress” immediately after the encounter.

His body has been deposited at the morgue of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex, OAUTHC, Ile-Ife, pending an autopsy to determine the actual cause of death.
“Thunderbolt” Rumour Spreads

Meanwhile, medical explanations have been overshadowed by traditional beliefs, with some residents claiming that Apetu may have fallen victim to what Yoruba tradition refers to as “aran” — thunderbolt.

The belief holds that a person affected by thunderbolt can transfer the supposed fatal effect to a sexual partner.
However, police sources said there is no scientific or medical confirmation linking Apetu’s death to the claim.

A senior officer of the Osun State Police Command, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the police were aware of the videos and stories circulating online and urged the public to stop spreading unverified information.

“We urge members of the public to desist from spreading unverified information. Let the doctors and the law do their work,” the officer said.
Community in Shock

The incident has sent shockwaves through Odi-Olokun, where Apetu was known as an active member of the local vigilante group.

Neighbours described him as strong and healthy, while the sudden nature of his collapse has heightened fear and speculation within the community.

As of press time, the identity of the detained woman had not been released by the police. Authorities said she was assisting with investigations.

The Police Command appealed to residents to remain calm and allow medical experts to establish what caused Apetu’s death before drawing conclusions.

“Until the autopsy is out, everything else is speculation,” the officer added.
The incident has once again highlighted the tension between traditional beliefs and modern medicine in parts of Osun State, where stories of “aran” continue to influence community conversations.
