TUC Rejects FG’s ₦70,000 Transport Allowance, Demands ₦300,000 Minimum Wage
The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has rejected the Federal Government’s proposed ₦70,000 monthly transport allowance for workers, demanding an immediate salary increase to cushion the effects of the prevailing economic hardship.
This was contained in a statement issued by the TUC President, Comrade Festus Osifo, and the Secretary-General, Comrade Nuhu Toro.
Comrade Osifo called on the Federal Government to approve an immediate salary increase to cushion the severe economic hardship, rising food prices, and surging transportation costs currently burdening the nation’s workforce.
He urged the Federal Government to set the baseline pay for the lowest-paid Nigerian worker at ₦300,000.

The TUC President pointed out that several state governments had already taken proactive measures by raising their minimum wages above ₦100,000.
Comrade Osifo also revealed that over 80 per cent of states and the informal sector had failed to implement previous wage awards.
He stressed that the prevailing economic pressures were not limited to federal civil servants but also affected state and local government employees and pensioners.

The TUC President called on governments at all levels to ensure the timely payment of salaries and pensions.
