The Senate Press Corps has honoured the incumbent Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, as the most outstanding Deputy Senate President for sponsoring a record 48 bills since 1999.

The Chairman of the Senate Press Corps, Comrade Taye Adewale, confirmed this while reading the citation of Senator Barau Jibrin during the presentation of the award in Abuja.

Adewale stressed that members of the Corps had critically used their journalistic lenses to carefully assess his performance since June 2023, when he emerged as Deputy Senate President.

He further reflected on the period from June 3, 1999, when the Fourth National Assembly was inaugurated, to the present, noting that five distinguished Nigerians had occupied and served in the position. However, based on its comparative assessment, the Senate Press Corps identified the current Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, as the most outstanding performer.

He added that within the last 14 months, from June 2023 to November 2026, out of 48 months, Deputy Senate President Barau had sponsored 48 bills.

In fact, the number would rise to 49 by the following day, as he was expected to introduce another important bill aimed at comprehensively reforming the agricultural sector.

“Out of the 48 bills, five have been passed into law. They include the North West Development Commission Establishment Bill 2023, National Identity Management Commission Repeal and Re-enactment Bill 2024, Agricultural Research Council Act Amendment Bill 2024, Federal Medical Centre Gwazo, Kano State Establishment Bill 2024, and Federal University of Science and Technology, Kabo Establishment Bill 2025.”

He noted that the 48 bills sponsored by Senator Barau I. Jibrin represented the highest number sponsored by any of the 109 distinguished senators, making him the senator with the highest number of bills ever sponsored by any of his predecessors within a similar 14-month period from 1999 to date.

Responding, the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, used the occasion to thank members of the Press Corps for recognising his modest contributions to the development of the country’s legislature, particularly in his capacity as Deputy Senate President.

Senator Barau appreciated the gesture, saying it would propel him to do more.
“It’s a kind of propeller that, yes, I’ve been recognized, I’ve been identified, and what is better to be just like that same which is well known to all of us: to whom much is given, much is expected or much is required. What you are telling me indirectly is that, yes, I’m doing well, so you want me to do more.”

Senator Barau emphasised that he would not relent in his efforts to continue working for the development of the country, his state and his constituency, Kano North.

“I want to promise you that I will not relent, and I will not let the Senate in particular and the National Assembly down, and indeed the entire country. I will not let this country down.”
Senator Barau further reassured Nigerians of his commitment to doing more for the development of the legislature and the overall advancement and development of the country.
