Late heartbreak! Real Madrid concede in stoppage time as Real Betis dent their title hopes.
Real Madrid saw their La Liga title ambitions take another hit on Saturday after conceding a 93rd-minute equaliser to draw 1-1 with Real Betis at Estadio La Cartuja de Sevilla.
The outcome leaves Arbeloa’s side eight points adrift of league leaders Barcelona with only five matches remaining. Barcelona could extend that lead to 11 points if they secure victory over Getafe.
Madrid opened the scoring in the 17th minute through Vinícius Júnior, who reacted quickly after Federico Valverde’s long-range effort was spilled by Betis goalkeeper Álvaro Valles, finishing from close range.
The visitors had opportunities to extend their advantage. Kylian Mbappé had a goal ruled out for offside and later fired over the bar, while Jude Bellingham and Vinícius also missed chances to put the game beyond reach.
Betis gradually found their rhythm and were repeatedly denied by goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, who made several crucial saves. However, their persistence paid off deep into stoppage time. Ferland Mendy lost possession inside the box, allowing the ball to fall to Héctor Bellerín, who fired a low shot past Lunin to level the score.
The draw marks Madrid’s fifth in the league this season, with repeated slip-ups proving costly. Having already exited the Champions League, they now face the possibility of ending the campaign without silverware — a rarity in their modern history.
A recent win over Alaves had briefly reignited their hopes by narrowing Barcelona’s lead, but the Catalan side responded strongly against Celta Vigo, and this latest setback has increased pressure on Arbeloa.
Madrid will next face Espanyol before traveling to Barcelona for the season’s second El Clasico. Beyond that crucial clash, they will need Barcelona to drop points elsewhere to keep their fading title hopes alive.
