Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, , reportedly collapsed and was taken to a hospital following a confrontation with police officers during a Democracy Day protest at Unity Fountain in Abuja.


Eyewitnesses at the scene alleged that Sowore lost consciousness after police operatives moved to disperse demonstrators who had gathered to protest insecurity, economic hardship, and what they described as poor governance.

The protest attracted dozens of activists and civil society groups. However, the gathering was disrupted when security personnel reportedly fired tear gas canisters in an effort to disperse the crowd.
Witnesses said panic broke out as protesters fled the area amid heavy tear gas. During the confusion, Sowore was reportedly affected by the gas and subsequently collapsed.
Supporters and fellow activists quickly came to his aid and evacuated him from the protest venue. Sources close to the activist disclosed that he regained consciousness while being transported away from the scene in a vehicle.
Following the incident, Sowore was reportedly taken to an undisclosed hospital for further medical examination and treatment.
The development heightened tensions at the Democracy Day protest, where participants had assembled to voice concerns over rising insecurity, economic difficulties, and governance challenges across the country.
