Popular Nollywood actress Toyin Abraham has opened up about the struggles she faced before achieving financial success in the Nigerian movie industry.
Speaking in an interview with Nolly TV, the actress revealed that despite joining Nollywood in 2001, she only began earning substantial income from acting about eight years ago.
According to her, actors were poorly paid during her early years in the industry and often accepted roles mainly to survive and remain relevant in the profession. She noted that although the earnings were minimal, many practitioners continued working out of passion and commitment to their craft.
Toyin explained that her situation improved much later as her career advanced, leading to better-paying roles and opportunities in film production.
She said: “I just started making money 8 years ago, and I’ve been in the film industry since 2001. Back then, we acted and got peanuts, but we did it just to survive.”
Meanwhile, Nollywood actress Shine Rosman recently spoke about the financial realities facing many actors in the industry, noting that the public often assumes entertainers are wealthier than they actually are.
