Force PRO rallies journalists to support police reforms through accurate reporting.
The Nigeria Police Force has reaffirmed its commitment to improving transparency and internal accountability by strengthening its Complaint Response Unit (CRU), the Force’s digital platform for receiving, monitoring and resolving complaints from members of the public.
The newly appointed Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Okokon Edem, highlighted the enhanced role of the CRU during a courtesy visit to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, on Friday. He called for closer collaboration with the media to increase public awareness and promote accurate reporting of ongoing police reforms.
Describing the visit as part of his familiarization tour, CSP Edem explained that the CRU operates round the clock to address allegations of misconduct, extortion, harassment and human rights abuses involving police officers across the country. He said recent improvements to the unit are aimed at reducing response times, strengthening case tracking and ensuring greater transparency in handling complaints, in line with the reform agenda of the Inspector-General of Police.
The Force PRO also announced plans to hold a media parley with Zone 7 Command to deepen engagement between the police and journalists at the zonal level. According to him, the initiative will provide reporters with better access to information on police reforms, enabling more balanced and informed coverage. “Journalists are part of the police family,” he said, emphasizing the role of the media in promoting accountability and supporting institutional reforms.
Responding, the Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, welcomed the improvements to the Complaint Response Unit and reaffirmed the council’s willingness to work closely with the police. She commended CSP Edem for his openness and assured that journalists would continue to amplify citizens’ complaints, monitor CRU activities and ensure that issues raised receive the attention and follow-up they deserve.
The enhanced Complaint Response Unit is expected to strengthen public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force by making the complaint process more transparent and responsive, while encouraging the media to play a more active watchdog role in advancing accountability and meaningful reforms.
