FRSC Boss Charges Commanders on Smarter Traffic Management

The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mallam Shehu Mohammed, has urged commanding officers across the country to rise to the challenge of developing practical solutions to emerging issues affecting effective traffic management.

Speaking at the opening of a two-day training programme for management staff and commanding officers in Abuja, Mallam Shehu Mohammed said the current realities of road safety require leaders who are proactive rather than reactive in addressing challenges.
He noted that Nigeria’s road safety environment is becoming increasingly complex due to rapid population growth, urbanisation, and expanding mobility patterns. According to him, commanding officers must provide clear direction, deploy available resources effectively, and ensure that every decision leads to measurable improvements in road safety.
The Corps Marshal stressed that road safety cannot be achieved through enforcement alone, urging commanding officers to strengthen collaboration with relevant stakeholders. He also called for the adoption of technology to improve enforcement, emergency response, information management, and data analysis.
Mallam Shehu Mohammed further emphasised the importance of building competent personnel, mentoring the next generation of leaders, and fostering an institutional culture where excellence and responsibility are upheld.
The Training Coordinator, Professor Nasirudeen Usman, described continuous training and retraining of officers as essential to restoring sanity on Nigerian roads. He commended the Corps Marshal for prioritising capacity building to enhance the effectiveness of officers in traffic management.
The two-day training programme, themed “Strengthening Institutional Capacity for Enhanced Service Delivery in a Challenging Environment,” is attended by over 250 commanding officers.
