Beatrice Murugi’s Fall From Elite Athletics to Poverty Sparks Outcry

Beatrice Murugi, a former Kenyan professional marathon runner and athlete, has moved from the heights of elite international sports to a life of extreme poverty, sparking widespread concern and calls for government intervention in Kenya.

Murugi was originally discovered by a village elder in Nyahururu before moving to Japan in 2009. She completed her high school education there and officially became a professional athlete in 2012. At the peak of her career, her winnings significantly transformed her family’s standard of living. She bought land in Nyahururu, built a house for her mother and fully funded the education of her siblings.

However, her financial situation changed dramatically following a series of personal and financial setbacks. In search of another source of income, Murugi invested a significant portion of her career earnings in a commercial lorry. The vehicle was later involved in a fatal road accident near Delmonte.

Because its insurance had expired without her knowledge, after her driver failed to communicate the lapse, she received no compensation and was legally required to bear substantial medical and liability expenses for the injured victims.

In 2021, Murugi developed a severe and chronic stomach-bloating condition. Despite taking medication, the illness remains unresolved and has significantly limited her ability to train or engage in heavy manual work.

Her situation reportedly became even more difficult when her husband allegedly evicted her and their child from their home after she became seriously ill, forcing them to move into a rented accommodation while she dealt with her medical and financial challenges alone.

Today, Murugi reportedly lives in a tiny KSh 1,000-a-month rental room in Kerugoya. She picks tea and performs difficult casual labour jobs to put food on the table for her 10-year-old child.

Her situation has generated strong reactions on social media, with sports enthusiasts calling on Athletics Kenya and the Ministry of Sports to intervene, assist with her medical treatment and help lift her out of poverty.
