INEC proposes N873.778bn budget for conduct of 2027 general election. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has proposed a budget of N873.
778 billion for the conduct of the 2027 general election.INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, presented the proposal while defending the Commission’s 2026 budget estimates and outlining the projected cost of the 2027 general election before the National Assembly Joint Committee on Electoral Matters.
He explained that the N873.778 billion earmarked for the 2027 elections is separate from INEC’s 2026 budget proposal. For 2026, the Commission plans to spend N171 billion on its operations, including the conduct of off-cycle elections and by-elections.
Prof. Amupitan further noted that the projected budget for the 2027 polls does not factor in a new request from the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), which is seeking an upward review of allowances for Corps members who serve as ad-hoc staff during elections.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on INEC, Senator Simon Lalong, assured that the National Assembly would collaborate closely with the Commission to provide the necessary support for the successful conduct of the 2027 general election.
Likewise, the Chairman of the House Committee on Electoral Matters, Bayo Balogun, pledged legislative backing for the Commission but cautioned INEC against making commitments it may not be able to meet.
