Eight people were feared dead on Monday after a vehicle they were traveling in detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) in Niger State.

Reports indicate that terrorists had previously used a similar device to destroy a bridge along Luma Road in Borgu Local Government Area, connecting the communities of Luma, Babana, and Agwara.
The bridge served as a crucial route for residents, particularly those traveling to the Babana major border market held every Monday. The ill-fated vehicle, moving between Nuku and Woro, struck the IED, resulting in the deaths of all seven passengers and the driver.
Spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the attack and noted that security forces were conducting clearance operations in the area.
He stated, “On March 23, 2026, at approximately 6:30 a.m., reports indicated that around 2:00 a.m., suspected terrorists deployed an explosive device and bombed a bridge along Luma Road in Borgu LGA, linking Luma, Babana, and Agwara communities. The bridge was damaged during the attack amid ongoing security operations. Monitoring continues, and clearance efforts have been intensified.”
