Tension Rises in Jos After Deadly Gunmen Attack, Authorities Enforce Curfew
There are strong indications that an unascertained number of persons have been confirmed dead, while many others sustained various injuries following an attack by gunmen on Gari Ya Waye community in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Daily Echoes gathered that the assailants were seen riding on motorcycles on Sunday evening along the main road, where they began shooting sporadically, leaving victims in pools of blood, while the injured were rushed to medical facilities.
The incident has created tension across the area and the Jos metropolis.
An eyewitness who spoke with our correspondent lamented that there was no security personnel present for almost an hour during the incident.
Following the unfortunate development, the Plateau State Government imposed a 24-hour curfew to prevent a breakdown of law and order in Jos North.
This was disclosed in a statement issued to newsmen on Sunday evening by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Rt. Hon. Joyce Ramnap.
According to the statement, the curfew followed the tragic security incident that occurred in Gari Ya Waye community, Angwan Rukuba, on Sunday, March 29, 2026, which resulted in loss of lives and several injuries.
“The Plateau State Government, in conjunction with security agencies, wishes to inform the general public of the imposition of a 48-hour curfew within Jos North Local Government Area with immediate effect, commencing from 12 midnight of March 29 to April 1, 2026.
“The government under the leadership of His Excellency, Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang strongly condemns this barbaric and unprovoked attack on innocent citizens and assures the public that all necessary measures are being taken to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
“Citizens are urged to remain calm, stay vigilant, and cooperate fully with security agencies by providing any useful information that may aid ongoing investigations,” Ramnap stated.
