Peter Obi says national unity, security and good governance will top his agenda if elected President
Former Governor Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has stated that his foremost priority if elected President would be to unite Nigeria.
According to him, good governance should create an environment where mothers no longer fear for the safety of their children.Speaking after completing his party’s screening process, Obi said achieving such a vision begins with building unity across the country. He stressed the need to follow the Nigerian Constitution, particularly its provisions on federal character and inclusivity, adding that a secure and united nation remains essential.
“We want mothers to feel safe when their children go to school or work. We want a Nigeria where people can travel freely across the country without fear. Today, many Nigerians sleep uncertain about where their next meal will come from, and that situation must change,” Obi said.
He also stressed the importance of ensuring that public resources are not converted into private wealth, insisting that fighting corruption must remain a priority for the good of all Nigerians.
“Politicians are too focused on the next election while citizens continue to suffer. That has to change,” he added.
The former Governor of Anambra State further explained that the lengthy screening exercise reflected proper democratic practice within the party.
“The NDC is determined to do things properly. The screening was meant to confirm that candidates meet constitutional requirements and can provide the necessary documentation,” Obi explained.
On being the sole aspirant, Obi said he was uncertain whether other individuals had submitted applications.
“I do not know if anyone else has applied. Until the party officially declares me the only candidate, we cannot say for certain,” he said.
Following the exercise, Obi praised the screening committee led by former Ebonyi State Governor, Dr. Sam Egwu, describing the process as thorough and professional. He also commended the party leadership for upholding democratic principles.
The statement was signed by Ibrahim Umar, POMR Spokesperson, on May 20, 2026.
