The Commonwealth Scholars and Fellows Alumni Association Nigeria (COSFAN) has pledged to establish an endowment fund in perpetuity across universities in the country to support research activities in tertiary institutions.

The first of the endowments, valued at ₦10 million, was instituted at the Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies, University of Ilorin, in honour of Professor Ibrahim Gambari for his contributions to national development.
In an era increasingly shaped by complex conflicts and competing interests, the connection between peace and development remains crucial. Peace provides the foundation for sustainable development, as security and stability are essential for attracting investment, building infrastructure, advancing education, and delivering quality healthcare.
This reality underscores the significance of the ₦10 million endowment fund established at the Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies, University of Ilorin, in recognition of Professor Gambari’s contributions to national development.
Speaking at the event, Professor Ibrahim Gambari described the gesture as timely, noting that the study and practice of peace and development are becoming increasingly important in every nation.
Professor Gambari also revealed that the Angolan government had recognised him for his role in restoring peace during the country’s civil war.
“It’s a big honour for me and I’m truly delighted. For me, this is very timely and also a commitment to mentoring, excellence, and encouraging young people to give their best in their chosen professions. There is no higher commitment than a profession that combines the study and practice of peace and development in any country,” he said.
In his acceptance remarks, Professor Gambari expressed appreciation to both past and present presidents of COSFAN, as well as everyone who contributed to the success of the occasion.
The President of COSFAN, Dr. Ekundayo Samuel, and the immediate past President, Dr. Abiola Adimula, said the endowment fund was designed to sustain the legacy of Professor Gambari, whom they described as a major contributor to peace and development studies.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research, Technology and Innovation, University of Ilorin, Professor Mukthar Etudaye, described the initiative as a step in the right direction.
