Three Operatives Killed as Gunmen Fail to Breach NIPSS
Suspected gunmen on Monday night launched a deadly attack on the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, near Jos, Plateau State, killing three security operatives in what appeared to be an attempt to infiltrate Nigeria’s foremost policy and leadership training institution.
Sources revealed that the attackers stormed the facility at about 11:40 p.m., opening fire on security personnel and triggering a fierce exchange of gunfire.
A staff member of the institute, who spoke anonymously, said the assailants struck unexpectedly but encountered strong resistance from security operatives stationed at the premises.
According to the source, the attackers damaged a section of the institute’s perimeter fence and attempted to gain access to the facility before being confronted by security forces.
“The gunmen came between midnight and 1 a.m. They broke part of the institute’s fence and opened fire on security personnel on duty. Two soldiers and one police officer attached to the institute were killed before the attackers fled,” the source said.
Residents of the nearby Kuru community in Jos South Local Government Area reported hearing prolonged gunfire throughout the night, causing widespread panic and forcing many people to remain indoors.
In an official statement issued by the institute’s Head of Public Affairs Department, Dr. Osime Samuel, NIPSS confirmed the incident and stated that the situation was swiftly brought under control through the coordinated efforts of security personnel and relevant agencies.
“The situation was promptly brought under control through the swift response of security personnel and relevant security agencies.
“There is currently no threat to the safety of participants, staff, residents or facilities of the institute, and normal activities are continuing as scheduled,” the statement read.
The institute noted that investigations into the attack are ongoing and urged the public to avoid speculation regarding the motive behind the incident.
NIPSS also reaffirmed its commitment to the safety of participants, staff and residents, while commending the bravery and sacrifice of the security personnel who prevented the attackers from gaining entry into the facility.
As of the time of filing this report, the Plateau State Police Command had not issued an official statement on the incident.
