2027 Elections: EU Denies Rejecting INEC Invitation
The European Union Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS has dismissed reports that it rejected an invitation from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to observe Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
The EU described the reports as “inaccurate and speculative,” stating that it formally accepted INEC’s invitation dated April 17, 2026, and will deploy an Electoral Expert Mission (EEM) for the elections.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Monday and signed by EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, the delegation clarified that its response to INEC dated July 28, 2026, made no reference to worsening insecurity or alleged hostile treatment of EU observers following the 2023 election report.
“The two alleged reasons mentioned in the press reports do not appear in the letter: these are pure speculations,” the EU stated.
The Electoral Expert Mission will consist of between two and four independent experts who will be formally accredited as observers by INEC. The experts will assess whether Nigeria’s electoral process complies with international, regional and national democratic obligations subscribed to by the country.
At the conclusion of the exercise, the mission will prepare a final report containing recommendations for improving Nigeria’s electoral framework. The report will be shared with the Nigerian government and may be made public with the government’s consent.
The EU explained that its decision to deploy an EEM rather than a full Electoral Observation Mission was based on its annual assessment of partner countries, available resources and country-specific circumstances.
The delegation also rejected suggestions that the decision represents a withdrawal of support for Nigeria’s democratic process.
It stressed that the EEM “does not affect in any way” the continued implementation of its EU-funded Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria project, which includes support for the electoral process.
The EU further urged Nigerian media organisations to verify reports concerning its positions directly with its press and communication office before publication, in order to avoid spreading misleading information.
The clarification comes as political parties and other stakeholders intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections, with growing attention on electoral transparency and the role of international observers.
With the clarification, the EU has put to rest reports that it rejected INEC’s invitation, while confirming that it will maintain an independent expert presence during Nigeria’s next electoral cycle.
